White House Order on Sustainability Includes Geothermal Heat Pumps

April 29, 2015 – In an Executive Order, the Obama Administration includes geothermal heat pumps as one avenue for federal government building sustainability. The order, “Planning for Federal Sustainability in the Next Decade”, was created to cut federal building greenhouse gas emissions by 40%.

Geothermal is one of several options for renewable electric energy outlined in the Executive Order, along with solar, wind and hydroelectric. The order requires federal government buildings to increase the amount of electricity is uses from renewable sources to 30% over the next decade.

In addition, the order requires the federal government to increase renewable thermal energy and energy efficiency and decrease government vehicle fuel and water usage.

The changes should have a large impact as the federal government is the largest user of energy in the nation. The United States Federal Government uses 360,000 buildings, 650,000 vehicles and spends $445 billion annually on goods and services.

Needless to say, ClimateMaster applauds the order to recognize geothermal’s energy and money-saving benefits. Many government buildings around the nation already use ClimateMaster geothermal heat pumps to save money, including the Oklahoma and Colorado State Capitol buildings.

During the first year of geothermal system operation, the Colorado Capitol building saved $95,000 in utility bill savings (read more).
