A geothermal heat pump transfers heat between the refrigerant circuit and the ground instead of between the refrigerant circuit and the air. The ground is a much milder heat source, since the temperature changes very little over the course of the year. The outside air temperature, however, varies significantly over the year, making a geothermal heat pump much more energy efficient than a traditional air conditioner or heat pump.
So how efficient is a geothermal heat pump? Geothermal heat pumps are 3.5 – 5 times as efficient as the most efficient fossil fuel furnace. Instead of burning a combustible fuel to make heat, they simply move heat that already exists. By doing so, they provide 3.5 – 5 units of energy for every unit used to power the heat-pump system.
Because of this, a geothermal system is one of the lowest cost systems to maintain and operate. Year after year, geothermal heat pump systems offer the high efficiency necessary to keep operating costs down. In fact, they offer a lower operating cost than most comparably zoned systems.
